migrant media project
bringing diversity to european newsrooms
Migrant Media Project is a network that links migrant journalists to European reference newspapers and other media outlets. MMP aims to promote social inclusion, a pluralistic media environmet and better informed societies. MMP pilot project was developed in partnership with Expresso newspaper and financially supported by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

why it matters
Migrant inclusion is amongst the main challenges European countries are currently facing. Migrant journalists have a lot to say in the matter. They could — and they should — be part of the solution.
Journalism plays a pivotal role promoting tolerance and understanding among different cultures and communities.
At the same time, media outlets are facing a huge challenge to find financial resources in order to provide trustworthy and plural reporting while the need of diversity in the newsrooms has never been bigger: it is crucial for better informed and connected communities, combating xenophobia and hate speech.
why migrant journalists
European Media outlets do not actively seek migrant journalists, even when they aim to cover topics related to their home countries. MMP wants to change that.
Despite the geographical distance, migrant journalists still have access to their sources of information as well as an unique knowledge about their home countries. Plus, they don’t carry the cultural and language barriers that European reporters face while covering abroad.
Migrant journalists are also in the best position to cover stories about their communities within the countries where they now live in EU.
Valuing this knowledge and participation will contribute to the social inclusion of journalists in European countries.
It will also give European audiences access to more diverse and less biased information by creating better informed communities.
